“A Magical Evening with Authors: Andre Andreev & G. Dan Covert with cool clients: MTV, Adobe, and Deloitte”

The first fifty guests will receive a free, autographed, limited-edition, commemorative silk-screened poster.
Where:

Culinary Arts Museum
315 Harborside Boulevard
Providence, RI 02905
On May 31st, Andre and Dan’s new book Never Sleep (neversleepbook.com) will hit the virtual shelves of Amazon.com and the hearts and minds of graduating design students everywhere. This “pre-release” lecture offers a rare opportunity to hear from two of today’s “freshest” emerging designers (dresscodeny.com).
From the book jacket:
“At the combined age of 49, Andre and Dan’s work has been recognized by I.D., CommArts, Print, Graphis, Metropolis, The Type Directors Club, The Art Directors Club, CMYK, HOW, Adobe, Steps Field Guide to Emerging Talent and Young Guns.
They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts and worked for MTV. Currently they operate their own studio, dress code, located in the Lower East Side of New York.”
Speaking of themselves:
Dan is Ohio. Andre is Bulgaira. They is dress code. At the combined age of 50 their work has been recognized by shiny awards, appeared in lots of magazines, coffee table books, and 3 museums. They met while studying graphics designs at California College of the Arts. Then moved to New York and got jobs with MTV working in motion and print — before stupidly leaving their dream jobs to start a studio of their own.
They also co-teach Design, Type, and New Media classes at Pratt. A book they wrote about transitioning from school to work in the field of graphic design, entitled Never Sleep, will be published in the spring of 2008 by de.MO books. And a documentary short they directed about Ohio State football fanatics, called Across the Field will premier this Summer.
Andre eats meat and drinks that purple stuff, Dan dislikes puppies and is somewhat of an amateur magician. To supplement their income Dan and Andre work at Best Buy. See for yourself 24 hours a day at dresscodeny.com and swishahouse.biz.

Stefan Sagmeister: Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far
Astonishingly, Stefan Sagmeister has only learned twenty or so things in his life so far. But he did manage to publish these personal maxims all over the world, in spaces normally occupies by advertisements and promotions: as billboards, projections, light-boxes, magazine spreads, annual report covers, fashion brochures, and, recently, as giant inflatable monkeys. In this presentation Sagmeister throws his diary, a lot of design, and a little art together with a pinch of psychology and a dash of happiness into a blender and pushes the button. It tastes surprisingly yummy.

Bob’s Your Uncle and Fred present their integrated approach to industrial + graphic design, marketing, content, packaging… and FUN!
Bob’s Your Uncle was founded by Martin and Michele Yeeles in 2001. Originally from England, they moved to the States in 1993 “just for a year or two” and have been in Boston since. Martin is a graphic designer, Michele a former shoe-designer. “Bob’s your uncle” is a British expression used to indicate that a given task is very simple. Possibly inspired by Victorian Prime Minister, Robert Cecil, who appointed his nephew to a ministerial post, therefore to have Bob as your uncle was a guarantee of success.
Fred is a company specializing in fun, funky, yet functional items for the home. Many of their innovative products are fully developed in-house at their design studio in Cumberland, RI. Products are taken from the rough sketch stage to finished product, and then fitted with distinctive packaging concepts that grab customers’ attention. Fred also collaborates with a network of top designers and companies worldwide to expand their product offerings, giving buyers a greater selection of items with “gotta have it” appeal.

So, what’s the real difference between design and advertising? When you get right down to it, both deal with visual problem solving in the service of communication. But there are subtleties and details that differ between design for advertising and design for anything else. This coming Tuesday, June 19th, discuss what those differences are with folks from Providence ad agencies Duffy & Shanley and Nail.

If you’ve got the love, but not the money — or the money, but not the love — then this event is for you.
Terry Marks is principal of tmarks design, a multi-disciplinary design and marketing firm in Seattle. Marks will speak on a critically important topic for us all — how to combine pleasure and profit. We’ve all got to earn a living, whether we’re fresh out of college, at a midpoint in our careers, or rethinking our professional options…why not do something that you love and make money at the same time? Marks, whose clients include D.C. Comics, Microsoft, and Adobe, also writes and illustrates children’s books, short stories and films.
Marks has extensive speaking experience, having addressed such diverse audiences as those at the Ad Federation of Honolulu, the HOW International Design Conference, the AIGA annual meeting, Make a Wish Foundation, and numerous universities. This is Marks’ first time speaking to a New England audience, so don’t miss this opportunity to hear a legend in the design world.
His nonprofit work includes working with Powerful Voices, and Art with Heart (for which he co-chaired the development of the award-winning Oodles of Doodles for Your Noodle), and The Link Program. Marks also helped found ASTAR and is a member of the organization’s Executive Board.

“By connecting meaningful cultural values with modern design opportunities and technologies, designers and design managers can improve work effectiveness and gain an advantage by making their ideas appeal to cultural relevance.
As Asia continues to become an increasingly important region to design for and to design within, designers need to understand the vast differences between the Asian cultures. Focusing particularly on China, Korea, and Japan, Meaningful Design for Global Culture explores the cultural difference per region, in comparison to Western Europe and America.”
